Abstract: Error bars commonly appear in figures in publications, which can give information about descriptive statistics, or inferential statistics. However, many researchers wrongly use error bars for statistical inference in practical applications. In this paper, we use examples of the comparison between two independent samples to illustrate the misuse of error bars and show the right way to use the error bars. Our aim is to guide the researchers to use error bars properly.
